This Week in Elastic: First dev hangout & Logstash 1.4.3 released

Welcome to This Week in Elastic! In this weekly round up post, we bring you news on all aspects of the ELK Stack, including updates on Elasticsearch, Logstash and Kibana development, tips and tricks and upcoming events.

  • Check out our weekly deep dive into the latest developments in Elasticsearch and Apache Lucene. Dig in for all the updates and the video of Adrien Grand's recent talk from Berlin Buzzwords on The Algorithms that Power Elasticsearch and Lucene.
  • In other news Elasticsearch, version 1.6.0 was just released. The release blog post has full details on all the features included, such as the new upgrade API, which upgrades all the segments in an index to the latest Lucene format.
  • We've also got the The Logstash Lines, our weekly Logstash update. Check out the details on solving the Timeout Bug that made your life when bulk indexing less fun. Now fixed!
  • We also released Logstash 1.4.3 this week, a bug fix release for the Logstash 1.4 series. We recommend all users upgrade if you are using one or more of the following plugins: Elasticsearch output with node protocol, File Output and/or Logstash Forwarder with Lumberjack input/output. Check out the release blog post for full information.
  • You want some heat maps? We've got 'em, and a whole lot more. Check out this week's Kurrently in Kibana, which includes a whole lot of information on performance tweaks made to version 4.1.
  • And while they were at it, the Kibana team released version 4.1 yesterday. All the news you can use is included in the release blog post.
  • Watcher 1.0 Beta 2 to is out! Get it while it's hot.
  • In our ongoing series on community health metrics, Sonja Winter brings you the latest number crunching using Elasticsearch, Logstash and Kibana. Quick summary: sending your dev and ops humans to speak at conferences supports local user group health. But don't take my work for it - go look at all the data science and pretty graphs!
  • If you happen to be attending Cisco Live 2015, make sure to get a demo of Cisco Intercloud Fabric and Cisco UCS, both powered by Elasticsearch. You can get the full scoop from Raghunath Nambiar on the Cisco Cloud blog.
  • Michael Carruthers from the Postmark engineering team brings us the news on why Elasticsearch and SmartOS are a match made in heaven.
  • Jettro Coenradie authored an in-depth how to on Combining Geo Points With the Elasticsearch Percolator. Excellent walk through using a sample application based on Spring Boot and AngularJS.
  • Timothy Prickett Morgan shared an article on Synchronizing Data in Hadoop Lakes. In addition to identifying some common problems with the article's subject, he does a deep dive into MapR 5.0 and how Elasticsearch now provides real-time indexing in this latest release.
  • Kashif Siddique authored a tutorial on Configuring Elasticsearch, Logstash & Kibana on Ubuntu 15.04, a.k.a. Vivid Vervet.
  • Jerome Mainaud shared highlights from his talk at Devoxx, Elasticsearch: the Importance of Mapping. Since this talk was in the Tools-in-Action section, it was hands on. And so is this blog post! Check it out, complete with a hands on exercise you can do yourself from home and a link to the talk video for even more education. (en français)
